This school year, K-2 will be using a reading program called HMH Into Reading. HMH Into Reading is an evidence-based approach to teaching a child to read and write. The program will focus on Fluency, Comprehension, and Vocabulary. To continue this work at home, your child will be given a decodable book to practice fluency/decoding each week. Finally, we encourage parents to spend time reading with and to their child every day, as regular reading is one of the best ways to support literacy growth and a love of learning.
PHONICS/SPELLING
In first grade, we use a program called Fundations. Fundations® is a multisensory and systematic phonics, spelling, and handwriting program that benefits all K-3 students. Students are expected to read and write trick words from memory with automaticity. Trick words can be found here.
WRITING
Our first grade writing curriculum is integrated throughout the entire school day, allowing students to develop their writing skills across all subject areas, including reading, science, social studies, and math. Using a spiral approach aligned with grade-level standards, students explore persuasive, informative, and narrative writing each trimester, revisiting and building upon these skills throughout the year. This structure helps students strengthen their ability to communicate ideas for a variety of purposes and audiences. In addition to composing and sharing their writing, students receive explicit handwriting instruction through the Fundations curriculum, which supports proper letter formation, spacing, and overall writing fluency.
MATH
We use Bridges Math at Homestead. This program focuses on developing a student's deep understanding of mathematical concepts, proficiency with key skills, and ability to solve complex and novel problems. Bridges blends direct instruction, structured investigation, and open exploration. It taps into the intelligence and strengths of all students by presenting material that is as linguistically, visually, and kinesthetically rich as it is mathematically powerful. Along with the daily lesson, your child will also take part in Number Corner and Work Places (math centers) each day. Home Connections will be sent home as homework to support learning at school. Students will use the online program, ST Math, to help build their math problem-solving skills.
SCIENCE
In first grade, we use a combination of Mystery Science and PhD Science to support our Science Standards. Both programs are hands-on, engaging, and allow for student exploration and discovery. Throughout the year, students will engage in learning experiences focused on three areas of science: Physical Science, Earth Science, and Life Science. Before the start of each unit, we will send out a SignUp Genius to collect supplies and materials for our lessons.
SOCIAL STUDIES
We use Inquiry Journeys in First Grade. Inquiry Journeys units launch with a compelling question, move through a sustained investigation of content, and culminate when students take informed action. Our units are Families Near and Far, Our Special Location, and Civic Engagement.
SECOND STEP
Second Step is the social-emotional learning program we use in first grade. Children need social-emotional skills to thrive both in the classroom and in life. Social-emotional learning (SEL) curricula teach children techniques to:
- Gain confidence
- Set goals
- Make better decisions
- Collaborate with others in work and play
- Navigate the world more effectively
