Homework

Homework

In First Grade, we will have weekly homework assignments. We are laying the foundation for your child’s study skills that will be with them for years to come. Please take homework seriously and create a routine at home to be sure that your child is getting the proper time and workspace to complete his/her homework each night. In order to give you enough time to establish these routines, we will start sending homework home at the end August. Please refer to the First Grade Newsletters for more information as the time comes. On Friday, your child will come home with Math and Reading homework in their Friday Folder. All homework and Friday Folders are due back on the following THURSDAY, along with the Friday Folder.

MATH
All math work sent home will consist of concepts we have introduced and practiced at school. To ensure that your child is practicing the skill correctly, PLEASE REVIEW your child's work and check it for correctness.  Teachers will only be checking that the homework is turned in on time to help teach responsibility. If the math homework is taking longer than 10 minutes a night please contact your child's teacher immediately.

READING
Each week your child will be receiving a consumable book(s) to read at home. We refer to these books as our decodable readers. These books are chosen for your child to have access to a text that is at their independent reading level. The purpose of this book is to provide the opportunity to develop their fluency and decoding skills.  When students read fluently, it is an indicator that they have control over decoding words, are engaged with the text, and that they understand what they read. Developing fluency takes practice and time to reread familiar text. Therefore we would like them to read this book once a night and then record themselves reading the book on Seesaw. This becomes an important commitment for both you and your first grader, but it is an essential part of their reading development.  Students that engage in this practice make significantly more progress than students who don’t have the support and the opportunity to practice. (See the chart above)
Instructions for how to access Seesaw.

Special Homework

Occasionally, we will send home a special homework assignment. All information on these assignments will be communicated in advance, along with clearly stated due dates.
